Lindsay and Moira Merrithew met in New York City when he was studying at Juilliard School of Performing Arts and she was a dancer. While rehabilitating from a broken foot that ended her dancing career, she discovered a then-little-known exercise program developed by Joseph Pilates and became a Pilates instructor. When the couple moved to Toronto, where Lindsay pursued work in theatre, television, and film, they couldn't find proper equipment to use for Pilates exercises and decided to make their own equipment with the help of a carpenter. As Pilates began to gain wider recognition in the early 1990s, the Merrithews seized the opportunity to begin manufacturing modern, professional-quality Pilates equipment. Their company now operates some 30 Pilates training centers in North America as well as manufacturing Pilates equipment and accessories.

Easy to roll mat with cushion August 29, 2009

The mat is well cushioned and protects one adequately while using it. One of the good points about this is mat is that the welcrow straps are attached right on to the mat itself. This makes it easier to just roll and fasten securely to take the mat anywhere. This is however, also its negative point. The straps just hang out at one end of the mat and the welcrow portion can be rough if you happen to brush against it - which I found myself doing at times. No big deal of the smell as it wears away eventually. The cushion supports the back very well when you are lying face up on it, which is a big plus for me. I have been using this mat for more than a year now and I thoroughly enjoy it. This mat does not roll into the smallest possible roll that some mats are capable of, but that is just a note in passing.

THis mat is a very comfortable mat that provides good cushioning when doing exercies on the floor, both for Pilates when you do things like rolling like a ball, or doing sit-ups.
Has held up to use with no signs of wear and the straps make it easy to roll up and store. Well worth the price.

This is the first mat I ever bought and I am extremely happy I picked this one. It is thick and soft and perfect for floor exercising.

I'm very happy with the Stott Pilates mat. It is durable, lays flat, with no chemical odor. It is a good thickness for pilates providing good cushining for your tail bone and hip bones and it is not too squishy, either. The attached velcro straps keep the mat nicely rolled up and it is not overly bulky to tote around. I highly recommend this mat for pilates over the thinner yoga mats.
